RESEARCH AWARDS- 2008
The next call for bids for Research Awards 2008-09 is now available. The Indian Government's Department for Science and Technology (DST) have again collaborated to support elements of projects in 5 key subject areas. As a result, there are two separate award streams within these research awards.

The UKIERI-DST Science and Technology Awards
These awards offer funding for Science & Technology projects jointly funded by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and UKIERI under these 5 subject areas:
1. Stem Cell Research and Animal Biotechnology
2. Next Generation Networks in Telecommunication
3. Advanced Materials including Nanotechnology
4. Weather Science and Climate Change
5. New Energy Technologies including Hydrogen
Proposals that are primarily in these areas should be submitted through this stream.
DST is supporting the following elements of these awards, at DST rates where these apply:
• International travel for Indian research team members to visit the UK
• Eligible essential costs associated with the international visit, including visas and insurance
• In-India allowances for visiting UK research team members
• Eligible consumable / reagent costs associated with the visits of UK researchers to India
Areas and ways in which these awards differ from the UKIERI Research Awards (below):
Limits on time spent overseas: |
Research Staff and Post Doctoral Research Fellows: 15 days per visit
Research Students (Post Graduate and Doctoral): 89 days per visit
With a combined total of 8 visits between the two teams per year ( 4 each) |
Allowances for UK team members during visits to India : |
Research Staff and Post Doctoral Research Fellows: 1000 INR a day
Research Students (Post Graduate and Doctoral): 500 INR a day |
Accommodation for UK team members during visits to India : |
Visitors are expected to use institutional Guest House accommodation.

UKIERI Research Awards
These awards offer funding for collaborative research projects in all subject areas other than those listed above. Proposals that are primarily in areas other than those listed above should be submitted through this stream.
Areas and ways in which these awards differ from the UKIERI-DST Science and Technology Awards (above):
Limits on time spent overseas: |
For all research team members: 50% of their time on the project over the project period. |
Allowances for UK team members during visits to India : |
Research Staff and Post Doctoral Research Fellows: £ 900 a month
Research Students (Post Graduate and Doctoral): £ 500 a month |
Accommodation for UK team members during visits to India : |
There is no stipulation as to the sort of accommodation visitors should use |

Kindly note that the online form has been disabled and we request you to submit your applications as word documents attached to an email, accompanied by your excel spreadsheets to ukieri@in.britishcouncil.org
Please ensure that your proposals are sent by 12 noon (UK time) on the 5 August. Also please mention in the subject line- DST or UKIERI for the research award scheme you have applied for.
